Buderim Craft Cottage
Suitable for anyone with a need for fun and a stash of gelli prints!
What to expect
This workshop has two purposes.
-
Learning visual design in book format.
Design is not something we can learn in a day or two—it needs constant attention and trials. Often the end result is messy sketchbooks, or stashes of doodles. Even though these sketches and doodles are very valuable, we sometimes want to hold a nicely finished work. In this workshop, you will apply your design skills without fear, using small book pages and colourful papers.
-
Here comes the second purpose of the class. You will repurpose your stash of old gelli prints. Combined with your design and colour ideas, your stash of old gelli prints will be transformed into a gelli print collage book.
Maybe you will want to add Calligraphy or drawings later!
For this class, you should bring all your gelli prints, the more the better. If your stash is depleted, you must get cracking and create more!
About your tutor
Gyounghee Lee (Hee) is a Melbourne-based artist, calligrapher, and book-maker.
Hee loves everything hand-made. Her artistic interests include anything using paper and inks—bookbinding, box making, printmaking, and botanical art.
Hee grew up in Busan, South Korea. She has been studying and doing calligraphy more than 25 years. She has attended numerous Master’s workshops and values both the basics and the history of the art very much. Hee is an active member of the Calligraphy Society of Victoria, where she is highly regarded for both her calligraphy and her teaching skills. Hee also currently teaches “distance” classes for students in South Korea and across Australia.
What will I need to bring?
Morning tea and lunch are included in your fee!
-
Children’s board books—1 or 2 old, used books. They usually have not many pages, from 5 folios or up to 13 pages. But they are all made of very heavy glossy boards. I do recommend less paged ones—5-6 folio ones would be perfect. You can find these at used book shops, Salvation Army or any Op shops for a couple dollars. The important feature of these books is that the spine is separated from the book body.
-
Glue—Liquitex Matte medium (the group can buy a big bottle and share it)
-
UHU glue stick.
-
Deli paper or waxed paper—for protecting pages from gluing.
-
Exacto knife—please bring sharp new blades.
-
Normal cutting knife (snap off knife)—please bring sharp new blades.
-
Scissors.
-
Metal ruler and cutting mat.
-
Masking tape (about 1.5cm or wider)—one tape roll is more than enough for the group.
-
A thin book or magazine or anything which has the same or slightly thinner than your children’s board book. We will use this to make the even height when we open the board book’s first or last page.
-
Lots of gelli prints/ interesting, patterned tissue paper (commercial ones are OK)/origami paper/ interesting old book pages/anything you want to try on collage, we can try.
